In July and August, the USARC takes to the fresh waters of Big Bear Lake for wet and wild water skiing, jet skiing, kayaking, stand-up paddle boarding, sailing and fishing. Using a variety of modified and standard recreation equipment, along with a skilled staff of recreation therapists, lifeguards, licensed boat operators and expertly trained volunteers, the excitement and adventure of these sports are safely introduced to each participant.
An exciting off-road, downhill wheelchair program offers access to back-country terrain and gravity-fed thrills previously available only to mountain bikers. Participants who want to leave the beaten path will feel the freedom of descending through the forest on wide-open fire roads or narrow, twisting trails. Bumps, ruts, rocks, roots and ravines are smoothed by the four-wheel suspension on these "Chariots" while disc brakes provide speed control and sure stops.
Summer sessions are either single day or overnight sessions held at accessible campgrounds. Popular overnight camping programs combine two nights of camping fun with a variety of the above water recreation experiences.
With recent concerns about youth detachment from outdoor activities, lack of physical exercise and increased health risks, the California Roundtable on Recreation, Parks and Tourism adopted the California Children’s Outdoor Bill of Rights for the purpose of recommending a fundamental list of experiences that every child in California would benefit from experiencing, before entering high school.Numerous studies document that children who do these things are healthier, do better in school, have better social skills and self-image, and lead more fulfilled lives. Boating is one way of helping children establish permanent bonds with their natural world, families and friends to help them go on to lead healthy and productive lives.
The USARC is in deep gratitude to The Lakeside Boathouse Tavern and Big Bear Marina for their generous hosting of ourprograms and vessels. Without the support of these exemplary and socially aware businesses, the USARC's life-changing summer programs could not exist. Please remember them during your next visit to Big Bear Lake.
